    Seesmic Acquires Twhirl

(Via TechCrunch) In what I think is the first Twitter-related acquisition, video chat provider Seesmic has acquired Twitter client Twhirl.
Twhirl is probably the best Twitter client for the Windows platform. Twitterific gets high ratings from users but it's a Mac-only client, so I've not used it myself.

The Twhirl client lets you easily post tweets and track those of the people you follow. It's got more flexibility than the basic Twitter web interface (support multiple accounts; allows you to post to Pownce and Jaiku as well) and has a great design. Twhirl is built on the new Adobe Air platform, so it's a very flash-like Widget as you can see here.

I find myself using Twitter more and more these days. It's great when you want to share a link or a thought rather than an entire concept.

My guess is that the Seesmic team is looking to apply the Twhirl functionality to video blogging. In other words, enabling Seesmic users to follow the video blogs and posts of the people you wish to track.  Twhirl is one of the first apps that uses Adobe Air, so it's also possible that Seesmic just wanted to acquire the technology team.  More details will follow tomorrow I'm sure.

UPDATE: Why did Seesmic buy Twhirl?  Dave Winer explains: It's the users, stupid.
PS - ditto for Dave's comment about how difficult it is to type Twhirl.  Every time I typed it into typepad, I had to eyeball it again to make sure it was spelled correctly. Something about the "Twh" - it just doesn't feel right.
