Yesterday, Fred Wilson posed the question of what to call the de-portalization of the Internet, embodied by the move from central portals like Yahoo to the search engine-driven web 2.0 world. A robust ecosystem has developed around Google, enabling numerous sites to interact with Google, but where the user interaction occurs on their sites, not on a central Google site.
Fred, not liking his “de-portalization” term put out a request for a better term. Alacra’s Jarid Lukin, not content to rest on his laurels after naming the freemium business model, has proposed we call this the Suburban Web. It’s an interesting analogy. The details can be found here.
